Free IPod For a Student Loan???

Looks like the high competition between student loans is driving some agencies to some new creative advertising strategies. According to this article entitled "Lenders Court Colleges' favor on Student Loans" some agencies are flying financial aid coordinators to the bahama's for a vacation/lecture in hopes they will get student loans through them. Other companies are offering popular items such as Apple Ipod's or Laptop's for university officials to use their marketing materials. Very interesting, that your university might care more about gifts than getting you the best rates or looking out for your best interests! Of course, the officials involved denied this and said they are use the gifts only as a means of giving feedback to companies.

This my friends is why it's important to stay tuned to this Student Credit blog and our website which will shortly be updated with all the important financial information you'll need to make the right decision on the best loans and credit cards!

Interesting Facts For Parents...

Check out this news article from , "Teach Teens How Credit Cards Work" .

Some shocking things I found in it:
"One of out of three high school seniors uses credit cards, and half of them have cards in their own names, according to a 2006 survey by the Washington, D.C.-based Jumpstart Coalition."

That means that potentially alot of high schoolers could be getting themselves in big trouble with this new found responsibility unless they heed the precautions of this article. I'd like to think this blog is focused on college students however it is the student credit card blog so we, must embrace all students and help build strong credit for everyone!

Another interesting quote, which I was just thinking about the other day:

"There’s some danger in the fact that plastic is just how things are done nowadays. Lewis pointed out that 18 to 24 months ago, fast-food restaurants did not take credit cards, and now it’s hard to find one that does not accept them."

Just a couple months ago I can remember that In-And-Out Burgers didn't accept credit cards and would force you to goto the ATM only to pay a $2 fee for a burger! Now, credit cards is their thing. However, what is good news and convienence for me might be bad news for students who are putting their burgers on credit. I believe the best poilicy with this is to only use your debit card for fast food transactions. Meaning only use money you already have in the bank for the cheeseburger and fries.

And wait, theres more! The article goes on to suggest that students start with a very low limit such as $500 until they have proven themselves responsible with the card. Even, after they have its important to keep the limit low until they are no longer financially challenged. Check out the additional resource suggested by this article for further reading, "Make Your Child Learn From An Allowance"
